the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> pam: now at 5:30 counting down to the shutdown of the bay bridge. we are now just three hours this is a live from the bay bridge toll plaza. some of the last drivers making their way across. here is what you need to know. again it start tonight at 8:00-pm. and the closure lasts for five days. the roadway will connected to the new eastern span. if all goes well -- the bridge will reopen by tuesday at 5-am. >> pam: new tonight. grant lodes is here to show us what it took -- to get to this point. >> reporter: it did not happen quickly. it was the loma prieta earthquake that revealed the bay bridge's vulnerability section of the upper span gave way. seismologists say, if the tremor had lasted even a few seconds longer, the damage would have been catastrophic.

>> reporter:despite those warnings, it has taken nearly a quarter=century to produce a solution. >> reporter:july 1933: construction of the bay bridge begins. what backers call a silver necklace across the bay opened three years and four months later. the cost was 78 million dollars, equal to about one point three billion dollars today. the toll was 65 cents each way. two way traffic on the top deck. electric commuter trains on the lower deck. they were removed in 1963 and eastbound traffic took their place. severe damage to the bay bridge. october 17, 1989: the magnitude seven=point=one quake damages the bridge as well as oakland's cypress structure and san francisco's central freeway. >> reporter:one month later, the bridge reopens. but a longer term solution is tougher. the pilings cannot be extended deep enough into the bay mud to stabilize the bridge. the cost of a retrofit, staggering.
